Sun in Sidereal Cancer
On July 16th, the Sun enters Cancer, and for the next 30 days, the spotlight will be on the heart of the collective consciousness. There will be shifting moods and mindsets, but also healing hearts and nurturing support. The Sun represents our confidence and strength, its inner and outer authority, and the planet in our chart where our soul shines. The Moon rules the sidereal sign of Cancer and represents pure feminine energy. Cancer is associated with the element of water. Water signs are characterized by changeability, emotionality, receptivity, and subjectivity.
As the 4th sign in the zodiac, Cancer deals with the home, mother, land, conveyances, peace of mind, happiness, education, and, of course, emotions, feelings, consciousness, and privacy. The Sun in Cancer brings a focus and awareness to how we protect our heart and the things we love while learning to live in the material world. A world where reality is a practical force attempting to harden our soft and pure consciousness. Our consciousness is our mind, which the Moon rules. The Moon, as ruler of Cancer, waxes and wanes, symbolizing the ever-changing state of our minds. During this solar month, the Moon changes signs every 2.5 days and changes nakshatras about every day.
This is the normal cycle of the Moon, but when the Sun is lighting up the house of Cancer, it is under the influence of the Moon. It will therefore take on the nature of the Moon, which is to have fluctuating confidence, changeable moods, strong sensitivities, and deep emotional connections on a soul level. The sign of Cancer represents where we take things personally. Wherever Cancer is in your natal chart will show where you take things personally in life. Where you become the most defensive, and where you may feel personally attacked if this part of your life is questioned. Of course, it depends on where your moon is, what house, sign, what nakshatra, if there are any aspects to your moon, and many other factors.
But, in general, the houses where Cancer is placed in your chart will be a source of sensitivity. This is seen by the fact that Mars, our planet of courage and action, is weakened in Cancer, unable to act with objectivity, but rather has subjective reactions. The protective nature of Mars becomes defensive. On the other hand, Cancer is where Jupiter becomes exalted. The nurturing and sensitive waters are the perfect environment for the wisdom and knowledge of Jupiter. In order to learn, we must be receptive and care for and about the things we let into our mind and heart, and that is the very essence of Cancer and the Moon - to receive.
But not everything in this world is meant to be received into our hearts. So much of the world is under malefic influence. Out of the 9 grahas in Vedic astrology, Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu are malefic. Even Mercury and the Moon, who are natural benefics, are so impressionable that they will take on the nature of any malefic nearby or aspecting, while a waning moon is considered dark and inauspicious. So that leaves us with only two benefic planets, Jupiter and Venus, and even they have a fanatic and hedonistic shadow side. So in a malefic dominant world, it takes a special soul to filter out the toxins.
Cancer is comprised of three nakshatras. Punarvasu, who is partly in Gemini, is ruled by Jupiter and is the archetype for having a renewal of consciousness. It comes after the storms of Ardra, and wisdom from the heavens is bestowed upon Punarvasu. There is a kind of rejuvenation of the soul as seen through this nakshatra. The next nakshatra is Pushya, ruled by Saturn, and indicates where we need to be disciplined and responsible in nurturing our heart. We become the things we take in, especially the things we are unaware of. So much of the media these days is laden with hidden messages and subtle psychological tricks, all designed to control our minds for the profit of corporations and greed. It's called entertainment for a reason.
And the third nakshatra, Ashlesha, ruled by Mercury, where we learn to filter out the toxic thoughts and memories, using the logical processing skills of Mercury to weed out the parts of our mind that are not supportive and not allow them into our heart. The end of Ashlesha is known as gandanta. Where water ends and fire begins, there is a soul lesson to learn and a karmic knot to untie. And as the Sun travels to the end of Cancer, where the poisons of our mind are stored, it will shine a light on past karmas that must be dealt with. The gandanta point is precisely located in the final 48 minutes of Cancer and the 1st 48 minutes of Leo. If you have any natal planets or your ascendant in this small portion of the sky, this transit will be the most impactful.
And if you have any planets at all in Cancer, this transit will be more felt by you than those without. But we all have Cancer in our chart somewhere, and that house will be the focus for the next 30 days. The only way to know is to observe your own experiences and emotions during this time.
If you are a Water sign, this is a dharma house for you. The sun is bringing focus to what is meaningful and how receptive you are to life that brings fulfillment.
If you are a Fire sign, this brings focus to a Moksha house; there can be transformation and an emotional release of some kind.
If you are an earth sign, this is a kama house, focusing your desires and emotional connections in relationships.
If you are an Air sign, this is in an artha house, the sun is bringing focus to your efforts and emotional resources.
