How to Calculate Your Birth Chart using an Astrology Calculator

Astrology Calculator Birth Chart Journal

To get started with astrology, you need your birth chart. This shows where all the planets were at the time you were born—not just your Sun sign, but your Moon, your rising sign, and the other planets.

I use the sidereal zodiac, which follows the actual constellations in the sky. It’s what’s used in Vedic astrology and what feels the most grounded and accurate to me. I know that when i look at the Moon in the sky, it is in the zodiac sign that aligns with the stars associated with that sign. Tropical is now almost 24 degrees off from where the constellations actually are in the sky. To me, using astrology is about being aligned with the universe, not just the Earthly season, which shift over time.

The only thing you really need is your birth date, your exact birth time, and the city you were born in. If you don’t know your time, try checking your birth certificate. Even a small difference can shift your rising sign, which changes the rest of the chart. If your time is unavailable, then use 12:00 PM, but just know that you will not be able to to read the houses, only the planets in the signs and their spatial relationship to the Moon.

Once you have your info, you can use my chart calculator here: lunarpersuasion.com/chart-calculator

It uses the Lahiri setting, which is the standard in most sidereal systems. This is the same method I use in all my readings.

When you first see your chart, it might feel like a lot. Just start with the basics. Look at your rising sign. Then see what sign your Moon is in. Then the Sun. That’s a good place to begin.

If you want help understanding what you see, I’ve created tools and posts that walk through it step by step.
